The design of this crematorium building is predicated on the arrival of mourners to the congregation space which is to the front of the crematorium building. Internally, there are two principal functions – the congregation space to accommodate the pre-cremation services and the crematorium itself along with ancilliary functions which include public toilets, plant and storage.
The public area of the building, the congregation space, is designed as an open transparent glazed space surrounded by a colonnade of steel columns supporting the deeply overhang of the roof. The space is covered with a zinc clad fan shaped roof rising from the north entrance façade to the height of the chimney at the south end of the building.
The crematorium and ancillary areas are enclosed by a high wall of random weathered stone. The building is set in a grove of trees where high quality exterior lighting and stone finishes are proposed.
The materials are natural zinc to roof and flank walls, selected random weathered limestone to the crematorium building and high quality aluminium curtain walling to the congregation space.
